I have a shield allready, just saw the blocking broadsword on youtube and thought it was cool. You can craft a Basic Shield at an Anvil made at an Inventor's Table, which itself is made using the interface brought up by pressing the C key if you want to start blocking attacks sooner rather than later. However, you can block damage using shields 1-handed items which can be wielded with another one-handed item such as a Shortsword or a Machine PistolBroadswords which specifically generate with the Parry ability where abilities are the special moves executed by clicking RMB with most 2-handed weaponsor a particular unique weapon which you might encounter near endgame.
